I have posted job ads for a CODER III position for the past couple weeks. The position requires at least 2 years experience coding INPATIENT and OUTPATIENT medical records. It is also required that the applicant is a credentialed coder. We have 3 positions are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus

Good coders are hard to find because it is important that accurate codes reflect the services that rendered in order to receive proper reimbursement. To clear the air in regards to Medical Billing and Coding students; finishing a medical billing and coding program does not necessarily mean that you are certified as a medical coder.

After completing the program, you should obtain a coding credential from the American Health Information Management Association or the American Academy of Professional Coders

As far as I know there are FOUR possible credentials to obtain:

  1. CCA
  2. CCS
  3. CCS-P
  4. CPC

The above credentials require you to pass a credentialing exam, and also obtain continuing education after you are certified.
